06/07 Premier League Preview -
Part I: Title Contenders

07.08.06

The new FA Premier League football season kicks off soon with some of the top teams looking in extremely good shape to challenge for the title or Europe and one or two others seeming to be a little shaky.

Here's our round up of what we think the best betting opportunities for the 2006-2007 Premiership season are likely to be.

LIVERPOOL

Benitez has been shopping wisely this summer and in Craig Bellamy, they have finally got a top class striker to get them some goals.

Other new recruits include wingers Mark Gonzalez and Jermaine Pennant, making an impressive attacking line up. They've brought these players in without losing any quality elsewhere, so this season - no, really - Liverpool may be genuine contenders for the FA Premier League title.

To Win The League: I like an each way bet on this. Out of all the big clubs, Liverpool have truly strengthened this summer.

Best Odds To Win League : 8/1 at William Hill

CHELSEA

Dissent in the ranks, with Gallas and Drogba apparently wanting to leave, means that all is not as it should be in the Chelsea camp. Does it matter though ? Can Mourinho deliver a third title and the coveted Champions League ?

Of course, they can. Chelsea still have far and away the strongest squad in the Premiership, even after losing great players like Gudjohnsen and Duff. And they've brought in Shevchenko who - I predict - will have the same impact as Van Nistelrooy did when he first came to England.

The signing of Ballack is a strange one (how to fit him and Lampard into the same midfield), but no matter, he is quality and will get goals. Plus, it's looking likely that they will sign Ashley Cole as first choice left back.

I wouldn't back against them winning the League. Nor should you.

Best Odds To Win League : 4/9 at Bet365, Victor Chandler, SportingOdds and elsewhere.

ARSENAL AND MANCHESTER UNITED

I've lumped these two in together because this season I don't see much in the way of League success for either team. Spending £18 million on Carrick is good business for Tottenham, but is this really the type of player that will win United the league? Clearly not.

The situation at Arsenal is the same. Rosicky - their new Czech midfielder - had a good World Cup but they struggled last season (especially away from home) and he isn't the man to change that.

I don't think either team will really be challenging for the title in 2007 and I expect one or other to struggle to qualify for the Champions League.

ARSENAL AND MAN UTD: BEST BETS FOR 2006/2007 SEASON

SportingOdds offer a quadcast bet on the teams to reach the Top 4.

I think Chelsea/Liverpool/Man Utd/Arsenal at 10/1 is a great bet.
