06/07 Premier League Preview -
Part III: Relegation Candidates

Predicting the teams to be relegated is often fairly easy - after all who would have bet AGAINST Sunderland getting relegated last season.

However, finding the value bets among the short odds 'favourites' to be relegated is the task we are really up against here.

WEEKLY BETTING TIPS

This season the teams coming up from The Championship look weaker than last season's promoted sides so the safe bet would be Reading, Sheffield United and Watford to be relegated.

However, there are vulnerable looking teams outside of these that are better value bets to be relegated.

WIGAN ATHLETIC

There is no doubting that Wigan overperformed last season. However, losing Jason Roberts to Blackburn and Jimmy Bullard to Fulham plus the ongoing Pascal Chimbonda saga means that Wigan are already weaker than last term.

Bringing in Heskey is hardly likely to result in goals and the lack of squad depth will prove problematic to Paul Jewell's men this season. I think they are likely to go back down.

BEST ODDS ON WIGAN TO BE RELEGATED:

MIDDLESBROUGH

premiership betting at William Hill Far more of an outside bet to be relegated, for sure. But let's look at the evidence. Last season, they managed to finish a poor 14th and looked very shaky.

Since then, they've replaced Steve McClaren with the totally untried and unqualified Gareth Southgate; have managed to sign only Julio Arca and keep getting turned down for the players they do want.

This does not bode well for the 2006-2007 season and I just don't see how Southgate is going to cope if they hit a bad patch. Relegation surely beckons.
