According to the story they are trying to boost the competitions profile.  They are also including a 48 team qualifying round (home and away legs) and still bringing in the 8 teams that get bumped from the CL to form a 32 team knock out tourney.  HOLY CRAP, how big is this thing?  I have an idea for you Mr. Platini, if you want UEFA to be popular so bad, then maybe you shouldn't have the CL.  They're like the same thing but one is pretty much meaningless... "Hurray, we won the second tier tournament because we weren't good enough to play with the best teams!"  I undertand that UEFA gives more teams a chance to play international type games, but don't try to artificially create a demand for it by putting a new coat of paint on it, it's the concept that's flawed, not the name.
