Transfer Window Stars
February 27, 2009 | Written by : Jim Haines
OK, so it’s only the end of February and the transfer window has only been closed a month, but already a few players are showing themselves to be valuable assets for their new clubs following moves in January.
Here we take a look at three of the best :
3) James Beattie, Stoke City
For my money, James Beattie has never been a truly top class striker. He’s slow, he’s inconsistent, he doesn’t have exceptional all round skills but…
But, he does have patches where he just can’t stop scoring goals and he is a great header of the ball. So, put him in a Stoke City side that plays to his strengths and away he goes. Four goals in five matches shows just what a canny piece of business bringing him to the Britannia Stadium really has been.
You never know…he might just keep Stoke up.
2) Wilson Palacios, Tottenham Hotspur
Palacios had forged a good reputation at Wigan Athletic for being an all-round, tough tackling, skillful midfielder and had attracted the attentions of Manchester United among others.
And an all-round, tough tackling, skillful midfielder was exactly what Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham needed. Exeunt £12million pounds. Enter Palacios.
Despite a defeat in his first match for Spurs, Palacios has been impressive, doing exactly what Redknapp bought him for. A man of the match performance against Arsenal just shows what a good buy Palacios may prove to be.
1: Craig Bellamy, Manchester City
Call me weird, but I’ve always been a big, big fan of Craig Bellamy. I like the fact that - when you see him interviewed - he’s clearly smarter than most footballers and he just doesn’t care about all that ‘media training-say-nothing-have-no-opinions’ bull.
And, frankly, any man that can wind up the self-righteous Alan Shearer and the tiresomely old school Graeme Souness is alright in my book.
Better than that, he’s a very good footballer when he’s fit as he is showing currently at Manchester City. Five goals in seven games is a fantastic return and he’s not afraid to bruise a few egos, which is exactly what’s required at Eastlands right now.
Mr Bellamy, we salute you.
