Premiership Previews (29th- 30th Nov)

The Manchester derby on Sunday, then, and you can’t help but get the impression that Ferguson turns up to these games with the initial good intentions of an uncle meeting his nephew’s challenge of a boxing day game of Monopoly.

His pre match conference on Thursday was game enough, certainly. “Ooh, we’ll bloody have you,” he said shaking a theatrical fist and encouraged by the light hearted laughter emanating from watching relatives. And City bounced around a bit, seeming validated by the attention and it was a sweet Christmassy snapshot.

The Scotsman’s benevolence on these occasions however is always fleeting: his outward display of invested interest diminishing rapidly, and distracted by the presence of Bourne Supremacy just starting on ITV, he tinkers with his team in a manner suggesting he hopes the opponent gets on with winning so he can sit back down and perhaps consider having a bit of a nap.

How frustrating for Manchester United supporters raised with a hearty competitive streak in these matters, how irritating it must be to constantly be beaten by an inferior City side. And how queer that all their success should have had such a quirky side affect –that it should have been to such a tangible benefit to City, who, by every right, were supposed to be the ones to suffer most in the wake of all their dominance and yet find themselves frolicking care free into these games, already mentally calculating where the three points will put them in the table.

Funny old game, one can only hope it doesn’t trouble Manchester United’s support- renowned for their modest and warm hearted grace- unduly.

Chelsea play Arsenal straight afterwards, bit of a big deal, this, two reasonable looking games on Sunday, and Sky have mentioned little else.

Imagine being on the next desk to Sky Sports at work. Like a ghastly braggart taking you through their holiday itinerary in punishing detail, they plough on talking, in love with the sound of their own voice and seemingly oblivious to the vacant nods and unconvincing murmurs from those unfortunate enough to be in their immediate vicinity.

They have an angle on this one, too, which makes it all the more unbearable: Gallas, once the best defender in England and now Angelica out of ‘Rug Rats’, isn’t too popular at Stamford Bridge and is releasing an autobiography promising to expand further on the situation which led him to apparently vow to score an own goal in Chelsea colours.

He’ll be booed! This is a big deal! Hopefully, our line manager will take our concerns seriously and bring them up with the station as soon as they get back from lunch. It’s either them or us at this point.

Portsmouth at home to Blackburn on Sunday as well, a game which Tone assures us is more important than Milan at home on Thursday. How bloody dreary and cowardly.

Portsmouth aren’t going to get relegated and have a much better chance of winning the UEFA Cup than the Premiership so their manager’s attitude is as illogical as it is unromantic and witless. Wither the cavalier flair that made you such a national favourite at Arsenal, Tony? Balls to the premiership, with its gnawing tedium and grey overcast skies, that was A.C Bloody Milan you were playing the other night.

Sometimes I fear these people making careers in football are the ones that understand it least. Blackburn Rovers. A.C Milan.

Elsewhere: Stoke versus Hull is a Premiership fixture, honest, Sunderland Bolton probably won’t be for much longer and let’s not insult anybody intelligence by bill Middlesbrough and Newcastle United as a North East derby.

Hello everyone, i just want to say kudos to Arsenal’s fans. We did it, even if we had pressure from other clubs. GUNNERS FOR LIFE.

Got something to say?
